Hello everyone! Caitlin here and I decided today to make a blog post about adult coloring books that can actually help with stress! I know, what a great idea!
So I’m sure everyone has seen this trend going around lately where people (and even some celebs!) post pictures of these coloring books and the caption usually says “loving this coloring book; it really helps with stress” or something like that! So how do these coloring books help with stress? Well, let’s find out shall we?
1: “When colouring, we activate different areas of our two cerebral hemispheres,” says psychologist Gloria Martínez Ayala. “The activation involves both logic, by which we colour forms, and creativity, when mixing and matching colors. This incorporates the areas of the cerebral cortex involved in vision and fine motor skills (which means coordination necessary to make small, precise movements!). The relaxation that it provides lowers the activity of the amygdala, a basic part of our brain involved in controlling emotion that is affected by stress”. So there you have it: its proven that it really does reduce stress!
2: Most of these colouring books are filled with intricate and detailed patterns and designs. Which means one picture takes hours so you’ll be so caught up in which colour to put where that you won’t have time to worry!
